How Dangerous is Surfing in a Thunderstorm?

Monday, Aug 30, 2010

As the official rainy season approaches in Tamarindo (September and October are the rainiest months of the year) we've already had a few spectacular thunderstorms. At WRSC, we often find ourselves surfing in the rain, and generally it's great. A light rain can knock down the winds, and glass up the swell. Plus, the rain down here is in the 80 degree range, and often comes with bonus rainbows, so it's pretty groovy. Butthunderstorms are different. We usually get at least one a week this time of year, mostly at night, and they can be real earth shakers. Sometimes you're out surfing when one starts forming in the afternoon.

The other day, surfing with my 10 and 12 year old, a big thunderhead started rolling in from the Southwest over the ocean, and soon there were lighting bolts visible a few miles off in the distance. Everybody else in the water kept surfing, but my kids asked how far away a thunderstorm was safe. Of course we all know that thunderstorms are dangerous, but for a quick answer to "how far away", I didn't have a good answer, so we got out of the water. A few days later, the topic came up at lunch with co-workers, and nobody seemed to know either. The general consensus was that they got out of the water when everybody else started to...which was sometimes when thunderstorms were almost directly overhead.

So I hit the internet for some answers. Turns out, surfing anywhere close to a thunderstorm is a pretty bad idea. A quick Google search shows dozens of articles about surfers all over the world who have been struck while surfing, and also diving, boating, and all other forms of water recreation. Being on the beach wasn't much better. In fact, being in the water was the second most dangerous place to be (the most dangerous is standing in an open field). The answer my kids were looking for...is that no distance is really safe. If there's a thunderstorm in the area, or even building thunderheads, it can strike unexpectedly even if it's still sunny where you are. In my tour of various articles, I was surprised to learn that only about 17% of people who are struck by lightning actually die...and yet I'd rather not join either statistical group.

Salty seawater is an excellent electrical conductor, and a lightning strike up to 90 meters away (a football field) in the water can still kill you. Lightning will always seek out the highest point to strike, and a surfer on a wave or sitting in the lineup could be that lightning rod. In the grand scheme of things, the chances of getting struck are still really, really low. But I don't think I'll push my luck. As beautiful as thunderstorms are, I'll be watching the next one from the bar, not my board.

Big Swell to Nick Hernandez

Thursday, Aug 26, 2010

Nick from Common Sense stopped by Witch`s Rock last week and busted out a fun and casual acoustic set from his new solo album. We captured all the action from one locked off angle with a cheap videocamera while we drank beer and enjoyed the show. To spice up the footage, we cut in some of the best shots from the Big Swell that blessed our coast for most of last week. The swell reports all say more of the same is on the way this week! Wish you were here.

November 6 - 13, 2009 - Join the Witch's Rock Surf Camp crew as we lead a surf adventure surfing Peru! Guided by WRSC founder Joe Walsh.

Every year WRSC guides a surf trip to Peru. Why? Because Peru has the longest waves in the world. You will need at least a 3/2 full wetsuit because the water isn't warm like it is here in Costa Rica. The waves are world-class, the terrain is rugged, the trip is an experience you can't miss. Green and High

Yes folks, we're less than a month away from our official "Green Season" Discounts of 25% (30% for return guests!) in the months of September and October. So if you want to enjoy the quietest time of the year with us, come on down! Always a lot of fun. On the flipside--bookings for "High Season" (December through April) are filling up fast. So if you were planning to Surf with Santa, Rock in the New Year at our Beach Blanket BBQ, Smooch with your Valentine at Sunset, or Hunt for Easter Eggs on the Beach, best to book now. We were booked solid for all of last high season (even putting guests into other partner hotels in town every week) so don't snooze if you want to secure your spot for those prime months.

Bonus Nachos

No, we're not just mangling the Spanish language trying to say "buenos noches"...there really have been a lot of Bonus Nachos around here lately. The last six weeks have been a great time to be hanging at the restaurant as we've been cooking up a bunch of new recipes to add to our menu, including upgrades to our world famous Nachos as Big as Your Ass, and new items we've never offered before. Don't worry, all your favorites will still be here, but better (thicker French Toast, marinated shredded Chicken standard on the Nachos, new Taco recipes that rock...) Yummy dishes have been flowing out daily as Holly and our hardworking kitchen crew test out the new offerings and refine the recipes. We've been cruising the new plates around the camp, getting opinions from guests and employees on the new Huevos Rancheros, Tortilla Soup, Chicken Teriyaki Bowl, Waffles, and more! Over the next few days we'll be trying out dessert recipes (Yes! We're finally doing desserts!) and we'll need to surf even more to balance all those ice cream calories. Look for the new menu in a couple of weeks.

Big Fish

Bigger Sushi Bar, actually. Check out our newly expanded Sushi Bar next time you come in, and we'll share our plans for ever more tinkering in the restaurant and beyond...

¿Dónde está el jefe?

Monday, Aug 02, 2010

Guests and staff at Witch's Rock Surf Camp might notice something missing. Over the last week or so we have heard the same question repeated over and over, "Where's Joe?"

Right now, Joe is in Rhodes Island where David Levy is teaching him how to shape awesome surfboards. Pretty soon, Joe will be back in Costa Rica making custom boards here at Witch's Rock Surf Camp in our brand new shaping room.

Any requests?

Why to leave your boards at home

Wednesday, Jul 28, 2010

I was sitting on an airplane waiting to debark in LIR when the baggage truck rolled up and the airline guys started offloading the luggage. The window seat gave me a perfect vantage point to watch the guys work while waiting for the doors to open. First off: a short board bag, tossed onto one corner of the baggage cart. Ouch! Second off: a long board case, thrown on top of the short board. WTF? I wondered what kind of boards were in the bags, and whether or not their owners were bound for WRSC. Last time I shipped a board, packed with great care and lots of pipe insulation, bubble wrap and towels, it arrived with the nose smashed as though it had been shoved hard into a wall. I hoped these boards would fare better...

Next item - a large suitcase, tossed on its side next to the surfboards. Another question came to my mind: were they going to leave those surfboards laying there while they filled the whole cart? Within three minutes I had my answer: Yes they were, and they were going to throw a lot of large, heavy suitcases directly on top of them.

We have a good quiver here at WRSC and we're adding new boards all the time. You can leave your boards at home, surf ours, and for just a few bucks a week take advantage of our board rental insurance program that saves you the worry of paying for dings, broken fins, and snapped leashes.

We can't wait to take you surfing! See you soon... Valerie

Why I Like Working Here

Monday, Jul 12, 2010

I like working at Witch's Rock Surf Camp. Not because there are waves and Joe lets me use a board if they are good and my board is at home (though those things help) but because, for the most part, our guests are awesome.

So now comes the big Thank You to Albert, Maya, Brendan, Lindy, Sean, Johnny, Mike, Julie, Chris and Jennifer. They helped make last week AWESOME.

Here's a photo of some of them from July 4:

Thanks again for coming down and making sure that everyone (other guests and the staff) had a great week.

We here at Witch's Rock Surf Camp would love to extend big ups to the Gallaghers. Deb and Brian got married right out front of the camp last February. It was a casual cerimony followed by a bonfire.

We here were honored that they thought of us for their big day and they were kind enough to let us share their wedding pics with you.

What's The Rainy Season Really Like?  By Shawna Mullen (8 years in CR and counting...)

Monday, Jun 21, 2010

Most people avoid September and October in Guanacaste, since those are the rainiest months of the year. If you just wanted to sit on the beach or play some golf, I might skip those months too...but for a surf vacation, these months can be great.

Rainy is relative. Sure, you could get skunked and have to surf in a downpour for a few days--but you'll already be wet, right? More often, these months are marked by clear sunny mornings followed by big thunderstorms in the afternoon, finished off by insane double rainbows and the most spectacular sunsets of the year. Some years it hardly qualifies as rainy season (last year was really mild) and some years it rains a bunch, but you still don't need a wetsuit. The air and water temps stay in the 80s. Everything is super green, flowers bloom, it's gorgeous--and the thunderstorms can be stunning too; vertical and horizontal purple lightning tearing across the sky with earth-shaking thunder. Sometimes the electrical storms continue to light up the night sky long after the rain has stopped. Nature puts any fireworks display to shame.

While the weather can be a crapshoot, the swell is consistently bigger in South Swell Season--so the surf usually rocks in the low season. And the best part is that those waves are pretty empty. Some other local businesses just close up for the rainy months, so airline tickets drop, we offer a big discount on our rates, and it gets nice and quiet everywhere. Locals love it, and we always have fun with the guests who come down that time of year. We like to schedule cheap, fun activities (like going to local Tico Cantinas for Dancing and Karaoke, Movie Nights, Card Games and Boardgames, etc.) and everyone is even more tranquillo than usual. Sounds fun right?

Green Season dates run from September 4th - October 30th. Witch's Rock Surf Camp has now started selling our weekly packages at 25% off for new guests and 30% off for our special return guests.

Book now at 888-318-7873, and you'll be down for low-season!

International Surfing Day! It Happened!

Sunday, Jun 20, 2010

I am in recovery. I sit here, alone, in the office at Witch's Rock Surf Camp recovering.

You see, here in Tamarindo, we celebrated International Surfing Day yesterday. It was awesome! The morning started off pretty terrible with cold rain. I HATE cold rain. I left New York in part to avoid cold rain but some how it found me yesterday in the wee hours of the morning. Just as the guys from the Surfrider Foundation and I started thinking the day was going to be a wash, the Surf Gods smiled, the clouds parted and the sun came out, thus beginning a perfect beach day.

The Surfrider dudes organized informal surf contests throughout the day, starting with the kids and ending with the Masters (aka the Surfrider dudes). There was music, Maria manning the grill, cold beer and soda and the guys from maintenance found the old volleyball net. Rafa posted photos of all the surfing and beach activities yesterday.

After spending the day in the sun, it was decided it was absolutely necessary for me to represent WRSC and attend the Waterman's Ball last night. I know what you all are thinking and it is true: I have an extremely difficult job. Anyway, I got all dressed up, bid on some items at the silent auction (didn't win anything), had a few drinks (maybe more than a few) and celebrated the reasons I came to Tamarindo (the awesome surf) and the reasons I stayed in Tamarindo (the awesome people).

And that brings me to sitting here in the office recovering, listening to Camera Obscura (the band not the Nico album). It turns out that spending the day out in the sun can result in sunburn and sometimes too much party... well, you know. But hey, International Surfing Day only happens once a year.

P.S. Happy Father's Day

International Surfing Day!

Saturday, Jun 12, 2010

Hey All,

Saturday, June 19th is International Surfing Day (think Easter, Passover or Ramadan for surfers) and we at Witch's Rock Surf Camp are super excited for the celebration.

Daytime celebrations will go from 8 am -2 pm on the beach in front of the camp. There will be a kids surf contest (entry is free and everyone gets a prize), Sand Sculpture contest and Beach BBQ.

I can't speak for the rest of Witch's Rock Surf Camp but I am most excited for the last activity on our list, the Board Swap. Bring old boards from your quiver that you want to get rid of and see what you can get in return. Maybe a new board for a great deal, maybe cash. The camp will have some old rentals in the mix and we will definitely be looking to add some new boards to the rental fleet. Other surf shops in town will be getting in on the action as well so it looks like there is going to be a great selection. Again, individuals and shops are welcome and all negotiations and exchanges are between board owners. I don't know about you, but for me this is way more fun than the traditional Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Witch's Rock Surf Camp is also going to have some ding repair specials going on to help people who pick up new boards get them surf ready.

That's it for the daytime activities but here in Tamarindo, you can't forget about the night.

From 7 pm - Midnight, the Waterman's Ball will be held at the Tamarindo Preserve Beach Club. There will be Live Music provided by Avelino and friends and, later, DJ Lock Ice and a silent auction featuring surfboards, hotel stays, spa visits, art and much more. Food will be provided and there will be a cash bar with a portion of proceeds going to the Surfrider Foundation. Entry into this fantastic party is $10 for Expats and $5 for Ticos. Make sure you look pretty as dress is "Tamarindo Formal."

If you are unable to make it to Tamarindo to celebrate with us, please celebrate this day at your surf break. This holiday is fun but the goal is to remind people to keep our beaches clean, so go help out the Surfrider Foundation by cleaning up your beach after an epic surf session.

See you on the 19th.

What It's All About... (a Post by Yana)

Thursday, Jun 10, 2010

Sometimes we're so focused on all the new stuff happening at Witch's Rock Surf Camp, we forget to mention the classics...like the whole reason this place was founded in the first place; taking surfers out to Witch's and Ollie's by boat to experience stunning waves in pristine nature. While these trips may have become normal for Witch's Rock Surf Camp, there's nothing standard about the classic boat trip to Witch's, and I was stoked to be able to head out there with my old friend Dave Ferrone, his friend Claudia, Mark "Bon Jovi" From Jersey (c'mon, you know you belted it out at Karaoke!), and Andres from WRSC. Here are a few snapshots, no epic action (sorry, see explanation below) but still they might give a taste of how bewitching a place Witch's Rock really is.

Claudia

Sorry I'm not a braver photographer. If I was, I would have strapped the big orange dry-case on my back and paddled into the beach through the waves with a bunch of expensive equipment that Rafa was silly enough to entrust to me. He must have figured I would punk out and just shoot from the boat, since he didn't seem too worried about all that gear ending up in Davy Jone's locker. If I had been willing to risk a couple of Nikons and a few body parts to play surf photographer, I could have gotten some great shots of Andres tearing it up, Claudia dropping into some hero waves, Mark scoring epic lefts that went forever, and David...who stayed out in the lineup well past the point where everyone else was completely exhausted, just to get a few more sweet rides.

You give love a bad name

Throughout the day, we were blessed by slightly overcast conditions and a few drops of occasional light rain--just enough to keep it glassy and limit the amount of sunscreen required. The conditions did seem to bring out the fish, and the term "teeming with life" took on a whole new meaning. The amount of sealife in the Santa Rosa National Park is just jaw-dropping, even for those used to the ocean. Flying fish, sting-rays, a five foot mahi, a sea turtle...and these were just the critters sharing the waves in the lineup. We didn't spot anything resembling the dinosaur crocs that are known to enjoy the neighborhood, but can't say the thought didn't cross our minds whenever schools of fish skittered by just a few feet away..."I wonder what's chasing those guys?...nevermind..."

David

There aren't many short boat trips in the world that transport you so quickly from relative civilization back to the Jurassic Period. The handful of pangas anchored beyond the break do little to dispel the realization that you are in Real Nature, just like it was for hundreds of millions of years before we crawled out of trees and started putting our opposable thumbs to work. Thank goodness Costa Rica has been smart enough to protect these vast areas so we can drop in occasionally.

Andres paddling back to the boat

As you can see from the shot of David all alone in the lineup, there were some good sized sets rolling through, and crowding wasn't exactly a problem! There's a lot of beach at Witch's, and after scoring an empty morning A-Frame directly in front of the Rock, a few more boats showed up, so we just moved down to another spot and had it all to ourselves until we couldn't paddle anymore. Admittedly...that moment came for me well before everyone else...but someone had to shoot a few photos right?

Our driver, Randal, loading up the boards

With Costa Rica in full green-season bloom, we soaked in the Technicolor panoramas on the boat ride back to Coco, but nobody lasted long in the van drive back to Tamarindo. Soon, we were all napping, exhausted and happy. And that's what it's all about.

Witch's Rock

Jammin in June

Thursday, May 20, 2010

Wish you were here!

June is a Jammin' month for surf in Tamarindo, and one of our favorites. There's a real balance to the middle of the year. South swells roll in. Sunsets are amazing. We get some welcome thundershowers, enough to make everything green and get some rainbows in paradise. Town is less busy, but not empty.

This June will be extra fun, because we'll have Zori (our 48' Grand Banks Surf Yacht) in Tamarindo all month, and our June guests will all get to experience the boat for FREE! Stay at WRSC in June, and we'll be doing one SUNSET TOUR on the Zori each week. Each guest at the camp will get to go GRATIS. The trip includes an afternoon cruise out to a secret beach, with drinks, snacks, snorkeling, and a spectacular sunset. What's not to like?
Snap up the remaining rooms and you'll be jammin' in June with WRSC.

See you soon!

Chargers rule in Central America

Posted 16 hours ago

Playa Tamarindo, Costa Rica – The Chargers are one of the NFL’s hottest properties in the United States, and now this growth in popularity extends into Central America, thanks to Joe and Holly Walsh, owners of the Witch Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo, Costa Rica.

A native of San Diego and a graduate of the former University High School and the University of California, San Diego, where he competed for two years on the Tritons’ surf team, Walsh moved to Costa Rica nearly 10 years ago with a dream and $20,000 in his pocket.

“I learned to surf at Torrey Pines when I was 16 and just fell in love with it,” explained Walsh. “After I graduated from college, I started interviewing for jobs just when my car broke down. I was actually at a Volkswagen dealership in Pacific Beach about to plunk down my last $20,000 on a new car to get me to and from work and I just decided my heart wasn’t into it. I kept thinking new car … surf camp? New car … surf camp?”

So instead of pulling into the driveway with a new Volkswagen Passat, Walsh instead rolled in with a used school bus that he purchased from the San Diego Unified School District. Weeks later, he and his father, P.K., a Tierrasanta resident, drove the yellow school bus down to Costa Rica. What followed is the stuff that dreams are made of.

When Walsh arrived in Costa Rica, he rented a loft apartment that backed up to Tamarindo Beach and began offering surf charters, using his old school bus to deliver groups of aspiring surfers to the best-known breaks throughout Costa Rica. Since then, Walsh, now 32, has turned his initial investment intoa thriving surfing business that includes the Witch Rock Surf Camp, an 18-room hotel and the Eat at Joes Restaurant & Bar that becomes the official home of Chargers football in Costa Rica every Sunday throughout the NFL season.

“During football season, fans from all over come here to cheer and watch the games and it is crazy,” said Carlos Arias, a native of Costa Rica who works in Walsh’s surf shop.

There is a sign in front of the establishment’s parking lot that reads “Reserved for Chargers Fans,” and the bar at Joe’s is decorated with the jerseys of Chargers greats like Junior Seau. Chargers pennants dating back to the 1980s decorate the ceiling.

“We used to have more stuff, like Charger Girls posters and calendars, but unfortunately some of it got taken by the locals,” Walsh said.

Thanks to a satellite dish located above the restaurant that nobody other than Walsh touches, he is able to show every Chargers game, home and away. And even wife Holly, who grew up in Littleton, Colorado, traded in her Broncos’ blue and orange for Chargers lightning bolts.

“I love the Chargers, not quite as much as Joe, but they are definitely my favorite team,” she explains.

The Chargers’ home base in Costa Rica is located at world-famous Tamarindo Beach, located in the northwest province of Guanacaste, about 100 miles from the southern border of Nicaragua. Central America is a haven for surfing and Walsh’s surf camp offers lessons for beginners at Tamarindo and surf charters for more advanced surfers that will take them to the region’s top surf breaks, including several that lie in Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the south.

Charger fans will feel right at home at Eat at Joes Restaurant & Bar in Tamarindo, particularly during football season. Joe and Holly greet all guests with a warm smile, a cold Bavaria and a great seat at the bar to watch Central America’s favorite team: the San Diego Chargers.

Hey All,

Join us at Eat @ Joe's this Saturday (or every Saturday) and check out the always entertaining Banana Kings.

While you're here, check out the shop. We just got a ton of new DaKine rashguards, Women's clothes from Santiki and some stuff from Rip Curl.

See you on Saturday!

WRSC - CNS Surf Contest - March 13 and 14

Tuesday, Mar 09, 2010

Witch's Rock Surf Camp is hosting the annual CNS Tamarindo Surf Contest right here in our own backyard, this Saturday and Sunday March 13th and 14th.

Registration is Friday evening in the Witch's Rock Surf Shop between 5pm-7pm.

WRSC will be hosting the official CNS surf contest party Saturday evening from sunset until 12AM.

Costa Rica's premiere radio station 91.1 will be DJing the party before and after the live music set by Tamarindo's own Banana Kings.

For more information about the Costa Rica National Surf Circuit visit the official CNS website.

As always this is going to be an awesome event so we hope to see you there!
