DESIGN YOUR GROUP PACKAGE

A WEEK IN THE WATERMAN LIFE.

Our legacy on this beach stretches back a quarter of a century to an old California school bus driven down here to chase a dream of a life filled with adventure and real human connection. We built this camp around a pure, unfiltered passion for surfing, clean comfort, and true ocean expertise. When you join our program, you are not just booking a tropical vacation track; you are stepping into a vibrant beachfront community where local guides and international guests share the sand peaks as true equals.

THE PERFECT BOARD FOR EVERY CONQUEST

Your daily program starts right at our massive beachside board cage. Instead of forcing you onto a generic rental board, our coaching team helps you select the exact right template from our high performance demo fleet. As the wind and swell shift throughout your stay, you can continuously swap out your setup to match the changing conditions and accelerate your learning curve.

EVERY SKILL LEVEL WELCOME IN THE LINEUP

This program is deliberately built for everyone, from multi generational families to dedicated lifelong surfers. We split our groups dynamically so that true beginners can comfortably learn fundamental ocean safety in the forgiving whitewash, while intermediate and advanced surfers head straight out to challenge heavy sand peaks and performance reef breaks with our expert local guides.

COASTAL EXPEDITIONS TO REMOTE BREAKS

True waterman living means expanding your horizons beyond the local beach break. On optimal tide days, your group will load up onto a local boat and slice through glassy water to score premium, uncrowded waves along our stunning coastline. It turns a standard training session into a true tropical ocean exploration adventure that you will never forget.

PURE FUN ON WILD TROPICAL SHORES

A real surf vacation is about the moments between the sets just as much as the riding itself. We take time to drop anchor at isolated local coves, explore completely empty stretches of sand lined with palm trees, and swim in pristine water. It is a casual, unpretentious way to reset, share fresh food with your guides, and soak in the raw energy of the coast.

PROFESSIONAL TRACKING FROM THE SAND

You do not have to worry about missing a single moment of your progression. Our dedicated media team stands right on the beach with high powered telephoto lenses, tracking your movements and filming your waves in high definition. Having your actual rides recorded from the sand changes everything, turning your daily efforts into visual proof you can see.

REVEALING THE SECRETS OF YOUR FORM

The real breakthrough happens when you step out of the water and pull up a chair. You will sit down with our coaching team at an open air table to review your raw footage frame by frame. Over a fresh coffee or a cold craft beer, your guide breaks down your stance and wave selection in a relaxed, social setting, handing over the digital media package to take home.

FAQs

1. Surf Programs & Skill Levels

  • What are the criteria for the Beginner Surf Program?

This program is built for guests with zero previous experience or those who have taken isolated lessons but need structured safety, lineup rules, and core fundamentals from day one.

Most likely, you will be able to stand up in the whitewash by Day 1 or Day 2; this is our consistent operational goal for guests, though individual progression speeds naturally vary.

The program focuses on advancing your skills throughout the week so you are actively progressing towards tracking down the face of an open green wave by the end of your stay.

All beginners start out learning on longboards to maximize stability, wave count, and water safety.

  • What are the criteria for the Intermediate Surf Program?

This program is engineered for surfers who can already catch green waves unassisted without being pushed, but need to master riding down an unbroken wave face consistently.

Intermediate guests must already possess a solid baseline understanding of standard lineup etiquette and wave priority rules.

The coaching utilizes video analysis to identify your exact granular areas for technical improvement.

Our specialized coaching system breaks down these target areas to pair you with instructors who focus deeply on those specific movements, maximizing training transparency.

  • What are the criteria for the Advanced Surf Program?

This program is reserved for independent watermen who have achieved total autonomy in heavy surf, with a complete mastery of wave mechanics and lineup pecking orders.

Every single day features one comprehensive, daily guided surf tour driven entirely by real-time ocean conditions, winds, tides, and swell directions. Because we operate at the mercy of Mother Nature, your weekly schedule is highly dynamic. Advanced guests may head out in our spacious, air-conditioned Sprinter van equipped with onboard Wi-Fi to chase unlisted regional breaks, or load up for a boat tour to spots like Playa Grande and Avellanas if that is where the waves are cleanest on any given day.

For advanced packages of 5 nights or more, your program includes one full-day boat trip to the world-class breaks of Witch’s Rock and Ollie's Point. This signature trip utilizes our private dual-outboard power cat featuring plenty of overhead shade and a private onboard bathroom (head).

We intentionally keep our tour groups small to protect safety and guarantee low crowd ratios in the water. Our daily van tours target a tight baseline of just 4 guests per coach, while our Witch’s Rock and Ollie’s Point boat trips are generally limited to a maximum of 6 guests. Real-time schedule shifts and family group bookings can alter these numbers slightly, but our absolute priority is to never crowd a local lineup.

Beyond your daily guided tours, advanced surfers enjoy full, unlimited access to our signature Board Cage Pass. This grants you friction-free, all-day access to check out, ride, and swap premium shapes from our high-performance demo quiver across the street, allowing you to match your equipment perfectly to changing daily conditions.

  • How long does the Beginner Surf Program session last each day?

We schedule up to 2 hours of dedicated in-water time for our daily beginner lessons. Surfing is a highly active sport, and while we provide a full 2-hour window to maximize your progress, our instructors dynamically adapt the pace. If students face physical fatigue, a session might wind down around the 90-minute mark to prevent injury and keep the experience fun.

Because we schedule these formal guided lessons precisely around the mid-to-high tide cycles to guarantee the safest and most consistent learning conditions, your exact session time changes slightly each day to match the ocean. All beginner lessons take place right out front in the highly controlled, forgiving breaks of Tamarindo Bay.

Beyond your time in the water, your day includes our mandatory Lineup Masterclasses on surf safety and etiquette at the start of the week, along with a robust daily mix of included cultural activities, yoga, and workshops.

  • How long does the Intermediate Surf Program session last each day?

Our core intermediate sessions target a full 2 hours of active in-water surf time. When we take the group by boat or van to an empty peak along Playa Grande's miles of coastline, our goal is to get you a clean 2-hour window directly in the lineup, which means your total trip duration will run longer to account for boat and vehicle travel times.

This water time is highly flexible and driven entirely by Mother Nature and group stamina. Sessions can run longer if the waves are all-time, or wrap up early if a passing tropical lightning storm clears the lineup for safety. Beyond the water session, your day includes specialized video coaching shot across multiple days, paired with targeted review sessions throughout the week.

For established intermediate surfers looking to maximize their wave count, you are never limited to just one session. You are fully welcome to utilize our on-demand Playa Langosta unguided shuttle from the Surf Shop floor to score an additional, independent afternoon session whenever you want.

  • How long does the Advanced Surf Program session last each day?

Advanced daily tours are comprehensive, multi-hour adventures that typically take 4 to 5 hours from departure to return. This window guarantees at least 2 full hours of intensive, in-water surf time at the region's premium breaks, though the exact duration is highly flexible and driven directly by the consensus of the guest group and the tide cycle.

Travel times are fast and smooth thanks to the improved coastal roads out to regional breaks, and our custom Sprinter vans feature powerful air conditioning, cold water, and onboard Wi-Fi for your absolute comfort.

If a single multi-hour guided tour isn't enough to satisfy your appetite, advanced guests are always welcome to double down on their day. You can easily coordinate through the Surf Shop floor to take our unguided afternoon shuttle out to Playa Langosta for a second, independent session to surf until sunset.

  • How many students are paired per instructor in the Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced programs?

The beginner program enforces a strict maximum safety ratio of no more than 3 students per instructor.

Intermediate program groups can be slightly larger as we target wide, open beach break peaks that easily support multiple surfers without crowded interference.

Our advanced program ground vehicle tours and boat trips aim for a maximum of 4 to 6 guests per coach. While there are no rigid, hard-set structural limits due to custom traveling groups or family bookings, our core goal is to never crowd a local lineup. We bring a quarter-century of local experience to respect communities and small, lesser-known breaks.

  • Do you offer separate longboard and shortboard instruction?

Yes. We provide specific longboard or shortboard instruction tailored directly to your individual riding goals.

This specialized style tuning is structured during your initial evaluation at the start of the week within the Intermediate Surf Program framework.

2. Surf Logistics & Daily Operations

  • Where do our surf lessons and guided tours take place?

Beginner Surf Program: All beginner lessons take place right in front of the camp in the highly controlled, forgiving sand peaks of Tamarindo Bay. You do not waste time loading up gear or driving around; you walk straight from your room onto the sand.

Intermediate Surf Program: Intermediate sessions focus on finding clean, uncrowded green wave faces. Lessons take place at the optimal peaks directly in front of the camp, up toward the Tamarindo River Mouth, or along the 1.5 miles of open beach break peaks at Playa Grande, which we access seamlessly via our boat shuttles or air-conditioned vans.

Advanced Surf Program: Advanced surfers spend their daily tours chasing the region's absolute best, high-performance breaks, including the world-class peaks of Witch's Rock and Ollie's Point via our private 27’ twin-hull power cat, or regional reef and beach break setups via our ground vehicles.

The Mother Nature Rule: None of these locations are rigid or hard-set. Because we are entirely at the mercy of shifting swells, wind directions, and daily 8-to-10-foot tide swings, our coaching staff and guides move dynamically across different areas every day to place you in the absolute best working waves for your skill level.

Playa Langosta Unguided Shuttles: Both Intermediate and Advanced guests who possess the total autonomy to paddle out unassisted, navigate an open ocean lineup, and manage reef breaks safely can request unguided drop-offs and pick-ups at Playa Langosta directly from the Surf Shop floor.

If you are unfamiliar with this heavy reef setup, the Surf Shop will provide a professional surf guide for your very first session to dial you into the lineup, point out rock hazards, and break down safety parameters before you transition to unguided shuttle drops.

  • Can I switch between the Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced Surf Programs during my week if I progress quickly?

Yes, you can absolutely switch programs if you progress quickly during your stay with us.

Moving between the Beginner and Intermediate programs alters the coaching style, adding regular video analysis and occasional boat trips outside of Tamarindo.

Every Friday, both Beginner and Intermediate programs join together for a signature Graduation Trip to another nearby beach for a major full day tour experience.

Upgrading to the Advanced program from a lower tier is entirely possible if your skills justify it, but you cannot immediately jump onto the Witch’s Rock panga boat due to the strict maximum safety caps of the Advanced roster. Roster upgrades depend strictly on real time schedule openings, though separate boat slots can be purchased on-site if available.

  • If I start in the Beginner Surf Program, can I switch to the Intermediate one?

Yes. If your instructor assesses that your skills have advanced past the beginner parameters mid-week, you can move directly into the Intermediate group. This path integrates more intensive video coaching and transitions you toward navigating green waves unassisted.

  • Can I go surfing twice in a single day?

Yes, absolutely. Costa Rica features extreme semi-diurnal tide shifts that can swing over 10 vertical feet between high and low water marks, completely transforming the behavior of a surf break.

Our formal guided lessons are scheduled around mid-to-high tide cycles because that is when our local beach breaks offer the safest and most efficient learning surfaces.

If you are in the Intermediate Surf Program and possess the autonomy to carry your own board, paddle out unassisted, and safely navigate an open water lineup, you can use your included Board Cage Pass to surf low-tide breaks at the River Mouth or take our unguided van shuttle directly to the reefs of Playa Langosta for a second daily session. If you lack this specific autonomy, you will remain in the Beginner Surf Program for your own safety.

  • What do I need to know about the Witch’s Rock and Ollie's Point boat trip?

This is an intense, full day adventure designed strictly for advanced surfers who can confidently handle heavy, world class surf. The day begins early at the surf camp. You must be at the camp by 5:15 AM to load your boards into the van. The van leaves Tamarindo at exactly 5:30 AM to drive to Playa Panama, where your boat captain will be waiting.

Our boat is a 27’ dual outboard power cat that comfortably seats up to 6 paying guests. It features plenty of overhead shade and includes a small marine bathroom (head) on board. Lunch and drinks are provided.

Tides dictate our exact path. Witch’s Rock breaks best on a mid-to-high tide and can hold a great wave up to 4 hours before or after the peak high water. Ollie's Point breaks best on a mid-to-low tide, showing its true world class form as the water drops. Depending on which tide cycle hits first, the captain will determine our first destination, but we routinely target both breaks as well as other working spots in the area.

We return to Playa Panama in the afternoon where your van driver will meet the boat, pack up your gear, and bring you back to Tamarindo. Return timing is highly variable because wind, wave size, and changing ocean elements rule the day. Expect to be gone the entire day, bring plenty of sunscreen, stay hydrated, and prepare to be tired out by the raw elements.

Note: The $17 international tourist entrance fee required to enter Santa Rosa National Park is not included in your camp package or day tour rate. This fee must pay directly by the guest.

  • Do you provide surfboards, or am I required to bring my own?

We provide a complete surfboard lineup, but you are more than welcome to bring your own equipment.

Return guests who visit us at least once a year receive 100% free, long term surfboard storage on-site so you can leave your personal quiver at the camp between trips.

  • What happens if I damage a surfboard during a lesson or while using the Board Cage Pass?

We offer an optional surfboard insurance program at the Surf Shop that completely protects you against accidental board damage on the water.

This insurance policy strictly excludes negligent gear use, such as dragging surfboards across concrete sidewalks or failing to strap boards down properly on vehicle surf racks.

3. Booking Guidelines & Day Passes

  • Are there any minimum or maximum age limits to join the surf camp?

No. We do not enforce any hard set age rules or cutoffs at our camp. We welcome guests of every single age group and skill level, from young families to independent travelers.

If you are in your 50s, 60s, or 70s, you belong here. We regularly coach healthy, active surfers well into their late 70s who want to learn or keep riding ocean waves.

Your ability to participate depends entirely on your own physical comfort, how you feel, and your personal desire to be in the ocean.

For very young children, parents handle the digital waivers and decide if their child is ready for the water. If a child is hesitant or needs extra care, we pair them with our most patient, youth focused coaches to ensure a safe, fun introduction to surfing.

  • If I am an intermediate surfer, can I join the Advanced group just for the Witch’s Rock / Ollie's Point boat tour?

No. To protect customer safety and match the extreme physical demands of these breaks, you cannot arbitrarily join the advanced boat trips unless your verified skill level matches the Advanced program criteria. If space permits, separate standalone boat slots can be evaluated while in the country.

  • If I am not staying overnight at your hotel, can I still join your daily surf programs?

Yes. You can stay somewhere else and still do our full surf program by paying our daily program rate without the accommodations attached.

To set this up, fill out our website contact form or call our Surf Shop directly 7 days a week at +1-888-318-7873. You can also reach us via our main WhatsApp link or the contact link at the bottom of this page.

  • What is the minimum or maximum number of days required to join if I am not a hotel guest?

There is no minimum or maximum number of days required for outside guests.

However, coming for just a couple of nights is like dipping your toes in the ocean without truly paddling out. Because the swell, tides, and weather change constantly, booking at least 3 or 4 days is the best way to get into the groove of the program and experience what we do down here.

  • Can I join the Advanced Surf Program tours for just 1 single day if I am not in the camp?

Yes, you can join our advanced van or boat tours for a single day if space is available.

Keep in mind that due to Mother Nature and the tide cycles, a single day might not give you the ultimate session of the week. Please note that the included Witch’s Rock boat trip is only available for guests booking a full 5-night minimum camp package.

Alternative: You can buy a single seat on an existing boat trip if we have one running, or you can charter the entire panga boat for you and your friends for $750 to completely control your own surf session. Contact the Surf Shop via WhatsApp or our web form to check the schedule.

  • Is 1-on-1 private coaching or long-term training available?

es. Upgrading to 1-on-1 private coaching is always available if you want personalized attention.

Because surfing is a lifelong pursuit, we also provide custom long-term coaching plans with intermittent instruction and video analysis for people who live in Costa Rica or plan to stay in the area for an extended period.

4. Camp Life & Tours

  • What kind of daily activities are included in the program if I am not surfing?

Your program includes a robust, rotating mix of daily cultural, social, and educational experiences designed to give you a full taste of Costa Rica.

Included activities feature open Yoga classes, guided beach walks, local tours, and specialty workshops like a tropical cocktail mixing course or a Costa Rican street cooking class.

We also curate trips to distinct local events depending on the week, such as neighborhood festivals, rodeos, or local beach excursions.

  • Is there a fixed, exact schedule for the weekly cultural tours and activities?

No. We do not maintain a rigid, hard-set schedule for our cultural activities because our calendar changes constantly to capture the best real-time events in the area.

This flexibility allows us to swap out trips based on seasonal conditions, current beach tides, and unique regional happenings so that your experience stays fresh, authentic, and highly optimized.

  • Which workshops are mandatory and run every single week?

While the casual cultural trips are entirely optional, our core Lineup Masterclasses on surf safety and surfing etiquette are strictly mandatory for every single guest registered in our Beginner Surf Program.

These critical safety workshops run at the absolute start of every week without exception to ensure everyone understands lineup priority, respect for local waves, and essential water communication before paddling out.

  • Can the Surf Shop help me book additional outside excursions like canopy zip-lining or catamaran tours?

Yes, absolutely. Our retail Surf Shop acts as your on-site tour concierge.

We handle all the communication and logistics to book premium outside excursions for you—including high-flying canopy zip-line tours, catamaran sailing trips, or hidden waterfall hikes—ensuring every operator meets our high quality-assurance guidelines.

  • Are major day trips like the local waterfalls or the volcano hot springs included in the base program cost?

No. Major full-day regional excursions—such as guided hiking trips to local waterfalls or relaxing day trips to the volcano hot springs—are not included in the base camp package.

These extensive land-based adventures are treated as a la carte add-ons that can be easily booked and paid for separately through the Surf Shop desk at any point before or during your stay.

  • Can my non-surfing family members or friends join me on the camp vans or boats?

Yes, within reason. Non-surfing spouses, parents, or friends are welcome to join and experience the tours with you if they are not entering the water, as this does not add crowding pressure to the local surf spots.

Our unbundled layout allows groups to mix-and-match different programs under a single reservation so no one feels segregated from the crew.

However, seats on our specialized boats and vans are strictly prioritized for paying surf program guests to guarantee their comfort. If a van or boat is at maximum capacity, we cannot crowd the paying guests, but if open seats are available on that day's roster, your companions are more than welcome to hop in and be part of the experience.

5. Flights & Getting Here

  • Which airport should I fly into?

You should fly directly into Liberia International Airport (LIR), which offers extensive direct flights from the US, Canada, and Europe.

  • Can I fly into San José International Airport (SJO)?

Yes, but San José sits over five hours away from the coast by land.

If you land at SJO, you will need to book a domestic connection on Sansa Airlines or a local charter service to fly directly into Tamarindo Airport (TMO), which is a short 5 minute drive from our camp.

  • How long is the drive from Liberia Airport to the surf camp?

The drive from Liberia International Airport (LIR) to our beachfront compound is approximately one hour and a half, depending entirely on real time traffic and local weather conditions.

  • How does the Saturday shuttle loop work?

Free airport pickups and drop-offs to and from Liberia International Airport are completely anchored to our Saturday-to-Saturday arrival and departure loop.

We actively monitor your specific flight schedules on Saturdays and run multiple camp vans back and forth all day long to match your landing times.

  • Am I required to book my stay strictly from Saturday to Saturday?

No. You are not required to follow a rigid Saturday timeline. You can arrive or depart on any day of the week for shorter or longer stays, and our online booking system easily handles custom itineraries.

However, we strongly recommend the Saturday-to-Saturday loop. It aligns with peak flight availability, optimizes your surf program progression, and allows you to start the experience alongside a core group of fellow travelers.

Logistically, the Saturday loop includes 100% free airport transportation. Arriving or departing on any other day means you must arrange and pay for airport transit separately. For off-Saturday travel, we can arrange private van transit for a fee, or you can utilize highly flexible local airport taxis and shuttles.

  • If my flight is delayed on Saturday, will the airport shuttle wait for me?

We do our absolute best to wait for delayed passengers. Our team monitors active arrival tracks throughout the day to keep our drivers aligned with your gate.

If your flight experiences a severe, late night delay that conflicts with other guest arrivals, you will never be stranded. You can easily take one of the official, licensed airport taxis permanently on standby right at the terminal exit to come straight to the camp.

  • Do you provide transportation if I want to explore other towns or beaches near Tamarindo during my stay?

We do not provide random taxi or ad-hoc transit services outside of our scheduled surfing and cultural tour itineraries.

Our non-surfing tours offer excellent opportunities to check out surrounding coastal beaches. If you want an independent day trip, a major car rental agency operates directly across the street from the camp.

Tamarindo itself is completely walkable, and local taxis and Ubers are highly abundant, meaning the vast majority of our guests never feel the need to rent a vehicle.

  • Is parking available on the property if I decide to rent a car?

Yes. There is public street parking available directly in front of the surf camp compound.

To give you total peace of mind, our property maintains 24/7 guard patrols and multiple security cameras that keep a direct eye on the perimeter and parking areas around the clock.

6. Food & Drinks

  • What is included in the daily breakfast?

Surf camp package guests receive complete access to order any single food dish and any single drink from the entire breakfast menu at Eat at Joe's.

This complete daily breakfast applies to all package guests, whether you are staying in our beachfront compound or at our partner hotel, Pueblo Dorado.

  • Are lunch, dinner, and alcohol included in the package?

No. All lunches, dinners, snacks, and alcoholic beverages across our entire property footprint—including Eat at Joe's, El Vaquero, Volcano Brewing Co., and Dawn Patrol—are paid for a la carte.

  • What type of food and dining experience do you offer on-site?

We host a highly diverse, complete culinary ecosystem right on the sand, designed to fully complement your surf vacation. Far from a generic hotel restaurant, our beachfront spaces bring together local Costa Rican flavors, a comprehensive custom sushi bar, a dedicated craft brewpub, and American surf-classic mainstays.

You can enjoy a complete range of dining options from sunrise to late night—including traditional Costa Rican Gallo Pinto and loaded breakfast sandos, local Dorado ceviche, fresh-caught whole Red Snapper, premium grilled Rib Eye cuts, custom burgers, and artisanal beach wood style sandwiches.

  • What are the details of your on-site Sushi Bar?

Our master sushi bar serves ultra-fresh, locally sourced seafood prepared daily. The menu features a robust selection of fresh Marlin, Tuna, and Salmon sashimi, classic Nigiri cuts, and premium multi-piece sushi boat combinations.

We serve an extensive lineup of signature custom sushi rolls—including our classic Rainbow Roll, Dragon Roll, and Spicy Lava Roll, alongside our famous house creations like Joe's Barrel Roll and the high-performance Witch’s Rock Roll.

  • Do you serve craft beer and cocktails on the property?

Yes. Our property features the original Volcano Brewing Co. craft brewpub menu, serving fresh pints of our signature Witch's Rock Pale Ale, Volcano IPA, Joe's Tropical, and rotating seasonal styles brewed to match the beach climate. We also stock all traditional Costa Rican domestic beers and premium international lagers.

Our oceanfront bar hosts a daily beachfront Happy Hour from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM featuring custom Mojitos, Margaritas, Piña Coladas, and Daiquiris. We also offer an elite tier of premium cocktails crafted with top-shelf spirits like Don Julio, Tanqueray, Ketel One, and Bulleit Bourbon.

  • Can you accommodate specific dietary restrictions like gluten-free or vegetarian?

Yes. Our menu features a wide variety of clean, whole-food choices to easily accommodate lifestyle preferences. We offer dedicated gluten-free options and a distinct selection of flavorful vegetarian dishes—including our fresh Hummus and falafel plates, rich Buddha Bowls, and our signature crispy Falafel Burger.

Please note that while we have exceptional vegetarian and gluten-free choices, our kitchen is not structurally optimized for strict vegan dining. You can view or download our complete, up-to-date visual menu directly via the restaurant section of our website.

  • Do you have a dedicated menu for children?

Yes. We are a highly family-friendly surf resort and offer a dedicated Kid's Menu featuring universally loved options.

Young surfers can choose from artisan breaded chicken fingers, penne pasta in house-made Pomodoro sauce, mini beef cheeseburgers, or grilled mozzarella cheese quesadillas, all served in highly accessible portions.

  • Is the tap water safe to drink at the camp, or do I need to buy bottled water?

The tap water at our camp is entirely safe to drink.

To completely eliminate single use plastic waste across the property, we provide a filtered water bottle filling station directly outside the front doors of the Surf Shop.

7. Rooms & Staying Together

  • What are the room features and layout?

Our property was hand-built little by little over 25 years. The rooms are dated but clean, comfortable, and priced entirely to match our front-row location right on the sand.

Every single room features powerful air conditioning, a private bathroom, hot water, and streaming Wi-Fi infrastructure.

Please note that our budget-friendly Tiki rooms are explicitly designed as smaller, minimalist spaces.

  • Are there TVs in the rooms?

No. All guest rooms intentionally lack televisions to support an authentic beachfront digital disconnect and encourage immersion in the local waterman lifestyle.

  • Do all rooms have an ocean view?

Most rooms feature an ocean view of some type, which is explicitly noted in each specific room layout description.

No matter which layout you select, every single room on the property sits within a few steps of the sand.

  • Can we share a room if we are all different surf levels or non-surfers?

Yes, absolutely. Our booking engine easily allows you to mix-and-match different surf program tiers or add a non-surfing companion to a single room booking.

This unbundled layout allows families and large groups to stay together under one roof without anyone feeling segregated from the crew.

Room availability at our primary beachfront compound is strictly prioritized for surf camp packages. If you want a standalone, room-only booking without coaching packages, those are readily available through our partner hotel, Pueblo Dorado, located just down the street.

  • What does a non-surfing companion receive?

Non-surfing companions pay a set flat rate of $50 per night to share a room asset.

This rate includes full access to our beachfront resort grounds, beach chairs, the pool, and our streaming Wi-Fi infrastructure.

They also receive full entry to all of our non-surfing itinerary activities—including open Yoga classes, guided beach walks, cultural workshops, and our Secret Beach Tour. They are only excluded from surf-specific tours, gear rentals, and daily instruction lines.

  • What is the room payment and booking structure?

We require 100% upfront payment at the time of booking to lock in your specific room selection and secure your spot on the roster.

  • What is your cancellation and rebooking policy if my travel plans change?

All room payments and surf camp packages are strictly non-refundable once confirmed. Because we manage a limited number of front-row beachfront rooms right on the sand, a last-minute cancellation directly prevents us from welcoming other guests.

If your travel plans change and you give us at least 30 days notice prior to your scheduled arrival date, we will convert your payment into a future trip credit, minus a standard $150 rebooking fee. This credit is valid for 12 months and can be applied toward any future stay, subject to real-time availability and any seasonal rate differences at the time of your new booking.

For cancellations made with less than 30 days notice, or for any no-shows on your arrival day, your payment is completely forfeited. We cannot issue trip credits or rebooking extensions for last-minute cancellations because that room inventory cannot be refilled on short notice.

Please note that peak season bookings—including Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter/Semana Santa weeks—are entirely final. Because these high-value dates fill up months in advance, peak season reservations cannot be cancelled, credited, or moved to a later date under any circumstances.

To protect your vacation investment against unexpected medical emergencies, family disruptions, or flight delays, we strongly recommend purchasing independent travel insurance. It is the absolute best way to secure your trip and ensure complete peace of mind.

9. Weather & Waves

  • What is the weather and surf like from November to April (Dry Season)?

The Dry Season delivers nearly perfect weather with sunny skies and consistent, clean conditions, with the seasonal rains wrapping up in early November. From December through March, strong offshore winds blow almost every single day, keeping the wave faces groomed and clean. While nothing in nature is ever 100%, it is incredibly rare to see a drop of rain over this stretch.

Because this beautiful weather coincides with cold winter months in North America and Europe, this is our peak season. The town of Tamarindo is at its absolute busiest and most vibrant, with more people enjoying the beach and the local social scene.

On the surf side, the overall wave size tends to be slightly smaller and swells can be less frequent compared to the summer months. However, because our coastline picks up consistent ocean energy year round, there is always plenty of surf to go around.

  • What is the weather and surf like from May to August (Green Season)?

The Green Season brings some of our absolute favorite months of the year for both surf and weather. Rains slowly begin to show up in May, but May, June, July, and August generally feature beautiful, clear, sunny mornings followed by passing tropical showers in the late afternoon or evening. It rarely rains all day long, and a passing afternoon shower is highly appreciated because it cools the air temperature down and can completely clean up the ocean surface for the evening surf session. July and August also frequently experience a beautiful, dry "Indian Summer" break in the weather.

On the surf side, this time of year is highly active. Costa Rica is directly exposed to heavy South swells generated during the Southern Hemisphere winter. Because of this, May through August delivers our most consistent, largest, and highest quality waves of the year.

If you want maximum wave consistency with significantly smaller crowds in the water and on the beach, the early Green Season is the ultimate time to book.

  • Does the camp close during the rainy season? What happens in September and October?

No, our camp never closes, and we surf every single day of the year. September and October are by far the wettest months of the year, with October being the rainiest and slowest month for regional travel.

During this peak rainy window, storms off Mexico or hurricanes in the Caribbean and Pacific can drive consistent, heavy rainfall for multiple days in a row. This extra rain pushes river sediment out into the ocean, which can alter the texture and color of the water in the lineup.

However, these specific tropical systems also bring unique, short period swells from the West and West Northwest. This completely transforms the region, lighting up unique "novelty waves" and hidden beaches that stay totally flat the rest of the year. September and October are quiet, uncrowded, and highly adventurous. As long as you come knowing exactly what to expect from Mother Nature, you can find some of the most rewarding, empty sessions of the year.

  • How does Tamarindo's unique geography affect the waves we get?

Costa Rica on average gets more waves in the summer months when it is winter in the southern hemisphere, but our unique geographic setup allows us to capture swells from multiple directions year round.

Tamarindo is one of the best spots in the entire country to pick up Northwest swells traveling down from the Northern Hemisphere winter. When a strong Northwest swell hits between November and April, several specific breaks inside Tamarindo Bay completely come to life, offering beautiful, clean wave shapes that do not fire at any other time of the year.

Because we have beaches that face multiple directions, breaking at different times with different winds and different swells, we offer truly year round surf. Our coaching staff utilizes this geography to move dynamically across different areas every day, ensuring you are always placed in the absolute best working waves for your skill level.

  • What is the water temperature? Do I need a wetsuit?

Our ocean water stays warm and comfortable year-round, averaging a tropical 78°F to 84°F (25°C to 29°C). Full wetsuits are never needed down here, though a quality rash guard is highly recommended for UV and sun protection.

However, there can be a few weeks out of the year—typically between December and March—when our strong offshore winds blow hard enough to cause a natural process called upwelling, which drops the ocean surface temperature significantly. On these rare days, the water can get surprisingly chilly.

While it is impossible to predict exactly when this temperature drop will happen, it is a smart idea to add a light neoprene vest or a surf jacket to your wardrobe just in case. If you do not bring one along, our retail Surf Shop stays fully stocked with these items, and there are several other surf shops in town where you can easily find them.

10. Safety & Local Vibe

  • Who keeps watch over the beach? Is the water safe for my family?

Safety is the absolute foundation of how we operate our company. Witch's Rock Surf Camp actually founded the official Tamarindo Lifeguard Program to protect our local community and our visiting guests.

We continue to host national lifeguard training courses right out of our compound every single year.

The main patrolled community lifeguard tower sits just a couple hundred yards from our resort footprint, giving your family a highly secure, heavily monitored stretch of sand to learn and swim on.

  • What are the safety certifications of your surf instructors and guides?

Every single instructor on our roster is an ISA certified coach (International Surfing Association) and a fully certified open water lifeguard.

Our team brings a quarter century of localized experience to the water. They understand the exact granular mechanics of our tides, sandbars, and currents to ensure you are always in the safest position to catch waves without risk.

  • Are there shark or crocodile safety risks in the water?

Costa Rica is world famous for its healthy marine ecosystems, but thousands of travelers, families, and surfers swim right here in Tamarindo Bay every single year without incident. Based on decades of operational data, the actual risk of a dangerous wildlife encounter is exceptionally rare.

Sharks are simply a non-issue at our local beach breaks because the shallow, warm water sandbars of Tamarindo do not attract them. While crocodiles do exist natively in the deep river mouths of Costa Rica, they usually stay well away from our surfing zones.

You are never left to navigate the ocean alone. Because our coaches and guides are certified open water lifeguards who maintain strict safety ratios right next to you in the water, we actively monitor the environment in real time. We handle the ocean logistics completely so you can focus entirely on catching waves with absolute peace of mind.

  • Are there bugs, mosquitoes, or tropical pests at the camp?

You will encounter normal tropical insects, geckos, and iguanas during your stay in Costa Rica.

Because our compound sits right on the salt-air beach break, constant ocean breezes keep mosquitoes down significantly compared to inland jungle camps.

Our property is fully immersed in nature—we regularly have monkeys hang out near the brewery, anteaters cruise past the pool, and local wildlife passing through the beachfront spaces, which adds immense authenticity to the experience.

  • Is the town of Tamarindo safe to walk around at night?

Tamarindo is a highly safe, welcoming beach town for families and solo travelers. It is a famous surf town that also features a lively late-night party scene.

Like any global tourist hub, shadier elements can exist late at night in intoxicated environments after midnight.

Our surf camp embraces a classic waterman lifestyle—we go to bed early and wake up at sunrise to match the ocean conditions.

  • Do I need any specific vaccinations or medical preparation before traveling?

No specific vaccinations are required to enter Costa Rica.

You only need a valid international passport to clear customs.
