If you’re searching for the best surf spots on the Pacific side of Costa Rica, then you’re in the right place. Picture this – warm sun, crystal-clear water, and world-class waves calling out to surfers from near and far. Costa Rica consistently ranks as one of the best surf destinations in the world, offering waves for every skill level and breathtaking surroundings to match. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, the country’s varied coastline promises an unforgettable surfing adventure. Here’s a closer look at 5 iconic surf spots you can’t miss when visiting Costa Rica.

1. Witch’s Rock (Roca Bruja)

No list of the best surf spots in Costa Rica is complete without Witch’s Rock. This is a spot that has been spoken of by the best surfers for 4 decades yet it has only been readily accessible in the last 20 years. Every kid from the 70’s, 80’ and 90’s had a Surfer or Surfing magazine Witch’s Rock epic frothing barrel shot pinned to their wall. It is the spot that inspired Rober August to come to Tamarindo, and Bruce Brown to make the Endless Summer II in Costa Rica. Situated in the far north within Santa Rosa National Park, this iconic destination is known for its stunning volcanic outcrop and remote, untouched landscape. Witch’s Rock delivers consistent, powerful waves, making it a dream for intermediate and advanced surfers.

Key Details
  • Type of Break: Sandy beach break with both lefts and rights.
  • Best Time to Go: Mid-November to April, when the Northwest Swells are prevalent and the offshore winds are working.
  • Tide: Works best at mid to high tide for optimal wave shape.
  • Skill level: Intermediate to advanced – on bigger days only advanced.
  • How to Get There: Only accessible by boat.

WRSC Tip: This spot works with low tide as well but we recommend checking Ollie’s Point with lower tides and surfing Witch’s Rock at higher tides.

2. Ollie’s Point

Ollies Point surfing Costa Rica

The famed point and beach named after Colonel Oliver North USMA where the Iran-Contra conspiracy took place into Costa Rica. Surf here and you are almost in Nicaragua. This is a world class right point break that can offer rides of 180+ meters on average days and much longer as the swell grows. This wave is hollow and yet has sections for performance turns, carves and cutbacks! It is a true gem of Central America and can produce EPIC conditions suitable for surfers intermediate to Advanced. It offers a rock and bottom at a river mouth. It can hold size 15+ feet and bigger.

Key Details

  • Type of Break: Right  Point, Rock Reef with sand offering long rights.
  • Best Time to Go: May to November, but can break January to March as well.
  • Tide: Works best at lower tides (low to medium) for optimal wave shape.
  • Skill Level: Intermediate and advanced (beginners can find friendly waves at the edges).
  • How to Get There: Only accessible by boat.

WRSC Tip: Bigger boards sit outside closer to the point, shortboarders can find and good entry with a quick tuck, barrel and drive on the outside. The first section is hollow. Not Grandpa’s mushy wave, this wave has fast hollow vertical sections that require constant drive.

3. Playa Negra

Playa Negra is one of Costa Rica’s standout surf spots and a must-visit for those chasing perfection. Made famous by the iconic surf movie Endless Summer II , this reef break boasts some of the cleanest and most powerful right-hand waves on the Pacific coast.

The wave here is fast and hollow, breaking over volcanic reefs, which makes it best suited for experienced surfers. The surrounding area maintains a laid-back vibe, with charming local eateries and beautiful landscapes that amplify the allure of Playa Negra.

Highlights

  • Type of Break: Reef break – fast, hollow right-handers
  • Best Time to Go: May to Mid-September for size and consistency and also has good waves January to February (smaller but clean swells and offshore wind)
  • Tide: Mid to high tide offers best shape; avoid low tide due to exposed reef
  • Skill Level: Upper intermediate to Advanced surfers only
  • How to Get There: Drive south from Tamarindo, about 40 minutes via Route 152
  • WRSC Tip: Only recommended to Advanced Surfers, the beach layout is rocky, the crowd factor is medium/high and the locals are competitive.

4. Playa Hermosa

Playa Hermosa, located just outside the bustling town of Jacó, is a favorite among advanced surfers due to its consistent and powerful waves. Translating to “beautiful beach,” this spot lives up to its name with its dark volcanic sand and majestic mountain backdrop.

The beach produces reliable beach breaks year-round, but the wave’s power and speed make it better suited for experienced riders. This is a very hollow and fast wave, Costa Rica’s version of “Pipeline” or “Puerto Escondido”. It offers “A” frame peaks that are thick, powerful (they come out of the deep central Pacific) that break within 50 meters of the shore. Shallow bottom sandy but hard. This wave can handle size but really depends on direction and shape of the swell to work best. With numerous surf competitions held here over the years, Playa Hermosa holds a special place in Costa Rica’s surf scene.

Highlights

  • Type of Break: Powerful sandy beach break – fast, heavy waves with punchy sections. One of the most consistent waves in the country.
  • Best Time to Go: One of the most consistent waves, and can work all year round. For the bigger southern swells visit between April to October.
  • Tide: Works best at mid-tide going high
  • Skill Level: Advanced surfers
  • How to Get There: About 10 minutes south of Jacó; easily accessible by car
  • WRSC Tip: To surf during the low tide, head to the north end to a spot called Terrazas.

5. Pavones – Best Surf Spots in Costa Rica

Pavones – Best Surf Spots in Costa Rica

Rounding out the list is Pavones, home to the second of the longest left-hand point breaks in this hemisphere world. Located in the Osa Region, Golfo Dulce on Costa Rica’s southern Pacific coast, Pavones is a bucket-list destination for surfers who love endless rides. Rumored to have been discovered and settled by the Legendary Pat Curren (World Champion Tom Curren’s Dad) this wave lives up to the legendary status, long lefts open hollow faces and fast sections. On a good day, you can ride waves here for over a minute, carving turn after turn as the wave peels along the shoreline.

Pavones is a remote spot, offering minimal crowds and a chance to enjoy pure, natural beauty. The tranquil surroundings make it the perfect destination for those who want to focus solely on surfing and relaxation.

Highlights

  • Type of Break: Left-hand point break – super long rides with multiple sections
  • Best Time to Go: May to October (rainy season) for consistent southern swells
  • Tide: Best on mid-tide rising
  • Skill Level: Advanced
  • How to Get There: Fly into Golfito or drive 7-8 hours from San José; 4×4 vehicle recommended
  • WRSC Tip: The waves can get very technical and challenging to surf when the swell is bigger. Be experienced with crowded point breaks.
