Why Choose a Family Surf Vacation at Witch’s Rock Surf Camp?

Daniela Ortiz • August 7, 2024

At Witch’s Rock Surf Camp, we believe that the best memories are made on the waves, especially when you can share those moments with the people who matter most: your family.

Kevin, the granddad, brought his whole crew to our camp: his daughter Kyleen, her husband Chad, their four boys, and Grandma Sherri. But don’t just take our word for it, let Kevin share how these little moments turned into unforgettable memories:

A Family Adventure Tailored Just for You

What makes a family surf vacation at Witch’s Rock special? It’s simple: we make sure every family member, no matter their age or skill level, has an amazing time.

The Baileys had a mix of surfers: grandparents who preferred to stay dry, parents and older kids with intermediate skills, and younger ones who were beginners with a bit of experience under their belts. We created a custom package that let them all enjoy the experience together. Knowing the little ones needed a bit more attention, we brought in an extra coach to make sure they felt safe and confident on their boards.

Normally, families can choose from our standard programs: beginner lessons, intermediate coaching, or advanced guided tours. But for the Baileys, we mixed things up a bit. We signed them up for the Intermediate Coaching tours but we chose surf spots that worked for everyone, avoiding the big, challenging waves and sticking with fun, safe options that kept the whole family smiling.

Creating Lifelong Memories

The best part of a family surf vacation isn’t just the surfing—it’s the memories you create together. At Witch’s Rock, we make sure those memories stick around. We capture your surf sessions and the moments in between, so you can look back on them long after your trip ends.

Family-Friendly Accommodations and Amenities

After a day of surfing, you’ll want a comfortable place to relax and recharge. Our accommodations are set up with families in mind, offering spacious rooms with kitchens so you can whip up snacks or meals whenever you need to. We know how important it is to keep the kids fueled up! Plus, with beachfront access and a pool overlooking the ocean, you’ll have everything you need to enjoy some quality family time.

And if you’re up for it, why not grab the boards and head out for one last sunset session? We’ve got a surfboard for everyone, ready for another go.

Flexible Dining Options for Everyone

Good food makes a great vacation even better, especially when you’re traveling with kids. That’s why we offer a variety of meal options to suit everyone’s tastes. From healthy breakfasts to hearty dinners, our two beachfront restaurants and coffee shop have you covered. We even have a special kids’ menu, so there’s something for everyone.

Refueling after the waves! Nothing beats fresh watermelon after a solid surf session.

More Than Just Surfing

Surfing is just the start of your adventure. The Baileys found that the real magic of Tamarindo lies in all the other experiences it offers. After a day of surfing, they explored the town, enjoyed family dinners, and experienced the pura vida vibe that makes this place so special

And there’s plenty more to do: an estuary tour, snorkeling, horseback riding, zip-lining, ATV tours, or a full day trip to the volcano. We’ve got activities that will keep everyone in the family entertained.

Make It Your Own

We can create a personalized surf package just for your family, too. During our low season (May through October), we’ve got the flexibility to tailor your experience, just like we did for the Baileys. If your family includes seasoned surfers or a mix of beginners and pros, we’ll put together a plan that fits everyone.

And don’t forget; during July and August, we celebrate Family Months! Besides our normal family packages, if you opt for our standard package, one child between 4 and 17 surfs for free with every adult surfer.

Yes — Tamarindo is considered one of the safest beach towns in Costa Rica for tourists. Most incidents involve petty theft, while violent crime affecting visitors is rare. With basic precautions, it’s a very safe destination for surfers, families, and solo travelers. Costa Rica has long been known as one of the most stable, welcoming countries in Latin America. Yet online discussions, headlines, and occasional embassy alerts often raise the same question for travelers: Is Costa Rica safe — and is Tamarindo safe to visit? This guide separates facts from perception , explains why safety concerns are often misunderstood , and looks specifically at Tamarindo through the lens that actually matters: the real experience of travelers on the ground . At Witch’s Rock Surf Camp, we’ve hosted thousands of travelers, families, and solo surfers in Tamarindo since 2001 — giving us a real, on-the-ground perspective of what safety actually looks like here. Understanding Safety the Right Way: Tourist Reality vs Headlines When people search “Is Costa Rica safe?”, they are often shown national crime statistics without context. This creates confusion. Here’s the key point: 👉 Tourist safety is not measured by national crime averages — it’s measured by what happens in tourist areas. National crime data includes: Drug-trafficking activity Gang-related violence Urban neighborhoods far from tourism Domestic and local disputes unrelated to visitors These factors do not reflect the reality of beach towns, surf destinations, or established tourist communities like Tamarindo. The same logic applies everywhere: Crime in parts of Los Angeles does not define safety in Malibu Crime in New York City does not define safety in the Hamptons Crime in Mexico City does not define safety in Cozumel Tamarindo must be evaluated as a tourist destination — not as a national statistic. Is Tamarindo Safe Compared to Other Popular Destinations? When Tamarindo is compared properly — city to city, destination to destination — the picture becomes clear.

Witch’s Rock, the wave from which we derive our namesake, popularized by The Endless Summer II most definitely lives up to the hype. If you’ve seen the movie, you know what this wave can do during a swell. Simply put, it’s a leg burning barrel. Witch’s Rock handles swell very well, it gets big, and it gets hollow. What
