Before You Go

PACKING, MONEY, AND THE TOURS WORTH BOOKING AHEAD.

What To Bring

MOST OF WHAT YOU NEED YOU CAN GET HERE. BUT THESE ARE WORTH PACKING. 

Small bills. Dollars in fives, tens and twenties. Useful all over town.


A rash guard. We sell them in the shop if you'd rather not pack one. Warm water year round, so a rash guard and board shorts are all you need. 

January to April, a strong offshore wind can pull colder water up and drop the temperature for a few days. If you feel the cold easily, a thin neoprene top covers it. Most people never bother and they’re fine.


A beach towel. We give you bath towels, not beach towels.


September and October, a light rain jacket and closed-toe shoes. It's the green season, so showers come through fast and then they're gone.

Money

Dollars and colones both work. No need to change money before you come.


Cards work almost everywhere. Bring some cash anyway for tips and smaller places in town.


Close your restaurant tab before you check out. It's the one thing people tend to forget.

Most of these need two people to run. The volcano day needs four. If you're on your own or there's just two of you, tell the front desk and they'll pair you up with other guests. The zipline, ATV and catamaran aren't for small kids. Four or five and up. Want a one-on-one session in the water? Private lessons are $141.25, or $90.40 each for two or three.

On The Way

Fly Into Liberia, Not San José.

Liberia is LIR. It's about ninety minutes from us and it's where our shuttle runs from.

San José is SJO. It's the bigger airport and the one that comes up first on most booking sites. It's five to six hours away by road, and a shuttle from there is $400 each way.

Getting Here From The Airport

Arrive on a Saturday and the round trip from Liberia is free. Our van, both ways, about ninety minutes each way.


Any other day it's $150 each way for the whole shuttle, not per person. Up to twelve people.


At the airport, look for a driver holding a Witch's Rock sign. Don't get in any other shuttle. 


Flying into Tamarindo's local strip instead? Shuttles from there are free, any day.

While You’re Here

Your First Day

Nothing starts until tomorrow morning. Today is yours.

Check in after 2pm. Drop your bags. Have a look around. Pick your board out of the cage whenever you're ready. Board insurance is $28.25 for the week, paid at the desk.


Then go for a swim, get a beer, sit on the sand, hang at the pool, walk into town... There's no schedule on arrival day. Your coach sets tomorrow's session time this evening, off the tide. You'll know it before you go to bed.

Getting Around

You don't need a car. Everything here is inside one footprint, and town is a ten-minute walk. Tours pick you up and drop you back. Taxis and shuttle services are available if needed, just ask us at the front desk.

A few practical things.

Tamarindo's safe, same as anywhere. The thing to watch is petty theft. Don't leave anything on the sand while you're in the water, or in a car. Security on the property around the clock. Walk anywhere you like during the day. At night, stick to the road. The beach has no lighting and it gets genuinely dark.

Also Good To Know

Laundry is $10 a bag, at either location. Ask at reception and they'll give you the bag.

If Your Plans Change

We don't do refunds. What we do instead is a credit, less a fee of $100 to $400. Give us a month's notice and we'll move your dates. Once you've used a credit to book new dates, that trip is locked. It can't be cancelled again. If you want cover for the things nobody plans for, we recommend Allianz Travel Insurance. Worth sorting when you book, not later.
